East and Southeast Asia Federation of Soil Science Societies (ESAFS) held its 15 th
conference in Kuala Lumpur on August 22-26, 2022. It was organized by the Malaysian
Society of Soil Science in collaboration with the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.
ESAFS is made up of 13 national soil science societies across the region, including Japan,
China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and others. It decided to give a lifetime
achievement award to one of its prominent soil scientists for contribution to soil, agriculture
and humanity in the region. The nomination from three national soil science societies were
considered and discussed by the ESAFS members during the conference in Kuala Lumpur.
The winner of the EASFS2022 Award was Dr Shamshuddin Jusop from the Malaysian
Society of Soil Science. A special plaque symbolizing ESAFS activities was handed to Dr
Shamshuddin during the conference dinner by no less than the President of the International
Union of Soil Science (IUSS) herself, Professor Laura Bertha Reyes Sanchez of Mexico.
