Alumni serve as a reflection of their alma mater, carrying its legacy through their academic achievements, professional success, social contributions, and more. However, a crucial question arises: Are alumni treated according to the value of their contributions, or merely based on their wealth, status, or notoriety?
The unequal treatment of alumni, based on background, is not a new phenomenon. Over time, protocols and conventions have developed, leading to the elevation of certain alumni—those with notable careers, significant influence, or public recognition—at official events. While this may be intended as recognition of their success, it often leads to a skewed representation of what truly constitutes a meaningful contribution.
Recognizing Contributions in All Forms
It’s essential to remember that an alumnus' value should not be determined solely by rank or wealth. Many alumni, working as educators, farmers, or social workers, unknowingly form the backbone of societal development. These individuals often do not seek accolades, yet their work has an immeasurable impact on their communities and the greater good. Recognizing their contributions can elevate morale and send a powerful message: that all forms of contribution, no matter how humble, are valuable.
Educational institutions need to embrace a more inclusive approach, welcoming alumni from all walks of life to participate in programs and activities. Every alumnus, regardless of their background or career, should feel valued and appreciated. By offering a platform for alumni to share their stories and experiences, institutions can foster a sense of connection and unity, strengthening the network within their alumni community.

Eliminating Bias and Fostering Inclusivity
Although the tendency to give special treatment to successful alumni is often unintentional, it can have negative consequences. When certain alumni feel marginalized or overlooked, they may distance themselves from their alma mater. It is, therefore, crucial for institutions to create opportunities that allow all alumni to engage meaningfully, regardless of their professional achievements or socioeconomic status.
One potential solution is to establish a recognition system that honors alumni for their social contributions, rather than their wealth or position. A panel of evaluators could be tasked with identifying alumni who have made significant, positive impacts, whether in small, localized ways or on a larger scale. For instance, UPM’s Wakaf, Zakat and Infak Management Centre (WAZAN) exemplifies how alumni contributions, regardless of size, can be appreciated through its Endowment Fund, which is strengthened by alumni support.
In Conclusion: Valuing Every Alumnus
Ultimately, every alumnus is an invaluable asset to their educational institution. Showing them the respect they deserve, without bias toward wealth or status, is a profound acknowledgment of their efforts and contributions. By fostering an environment that values diversity and inclusion, institutions can cultivate lasting relationships with alumni, strengthening a sustainable network that benefits future generations.
Educational institutions must lead by example, demonstrating that respect for alumni transcends economic or social status. In doing so, they will build stronger communities, encourage ongoing alumni involvement, and contribute to a culture of respect that will endure for years to come.
