Prominent Alumni - Conferment of the Title of Emeritus Professor

PROFESSOR YANG BERBAHAGIA PROFESOR TAN SRI DATUK DR. NIK MUSTAPHA BIN R. ABDULLAH

Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Nik Mustapha R. Abdullah is a former lecturer with outstanding contributions to the Faculty of Economics and Management (formerly the Faculty of Agribusiness and Resource Economics) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) as a whole. He began his career as a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Management in 1981 and retired in 2017. His areas of specialisation are Resource Economics and Fisheries Economics. He had taught courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Microeconomics, Natural Resources Economics and Fisheries Economics. He was previously entrusted by the Ministry of Education Malaysia to be the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development) from June 2004 until December 2005 before being appointed as the Vice- Chancellor of UPM from January 1, 2006, until December 31, 2010. Upon completion of his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor, he returned to the faculty as a Staff III Professor for three years before continuing as a contract professor until his retirement in December 25, 2017.

Currently, besides being appointed to the Board of Directors of UPM, he also holds the position of the Chairman of Putra Business School Board of Trustees. During his involvement as an academic staff and researcher at UPM, he has produced more than 100 publications in his areas of expertise in academic journals, books, chapters in books, technical reports and seminar proceedings. He has also supervised many graduate students from all around the world. His expertise is also being recognised nationally and internationally when he was appointed as a Board Member in many government and international agencies. This includes the Board of Directors of Lembaga Kemajuan Ikan Malaysia (LKIM), Majuikan Sdn. Bhd., MARDI Scientific Council, Malaysia Cocoa Board and Board of Governors of City University, Malaysia. At the international level, he was a member of the Editorial Board for Marine Resource Economics Journal which is based in the USA. In addition, he was also the Chairman of Asian Fisheries Social Science Research Network, Board of Governor of SEAMEO Regional Centre, Member, Worldwide Fisheries Co-Management Program, Scientific Advisory Panel of International Centre for Living Aquatic Resources Management (ICLRARM), Manila and Member, Group of Expert of Scientific Aspect of Marine Environment Protection (GESAMP), based in London.

In recognition of his service to UPM and community, he was conferred two Federal Government awards from the SPB Yang Dipertuan Agong, the Panglima Setia Mahkota (P.S.M) in 2010 which carries the title Tan Sri and Panglima Jasa Negara (P.J.N) in 2007 with the title Datuk. In the same year, he received the award of Dato’ Paduka Setia Mahkota Kelantan Yang Amat Terbilang (D.P.S.K.) from DYMM Sultan of Kelantan and Darjah Paduka Mahkota Selangor (D.P.M.S.) from DYMM Sultan of Selangor in 2006. The last two awards carry the title Dato’. Based on his strengths and expertise in academic, teaching and training, research and networking, he will continue to collaborate and enhance Universiti Putra Malaysia to become an internationally renowned Centre for Learning and Research. He will continue the existing international cooperation as well as enhance and diversify the network. Emeritus The Professor award to him is an acknowledgment by UPM for his valuable expertise and contributions at university, national and international levels.
