SERDANG – Six students including one with physical disabilities (OKU) received a laptop respectively which was handed over by the president of the Central OKU Association, YB Senator Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi. The ceremony took place at Alumni Relations Centre lobby which was also accompanied by the Eid feast.

The initiative was realised through Putra Cakna Alumni Care: Heart to Heart programme, which aims to assist B40 and asnaf students who are unable to afford to buy their own laptops.

Through students’ data obtained from the Centre for Management of Waqf, Zakat and Endowment (WAZAN) and Student Affairs Division (BHEP), several students have been identified to have constraints in providing their own laptops. This continuous programme will continue to cater for the needs of the underprivileged students now and again.

According to the Director of Alumni Relations Centre, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arba’ie Sujud, this programme is a continuous programme. There are a number of students who need assistance in pursuing their studies.

“We at Alumni Relations Centre will always strive and move together with alumni to seek funding to support the underprivileged students from time to time. The contribution might be in the form of scholarships, laptops, or food aids, we will continue to provide assistance to support the university’s vision and mission in producing students as good citizens as well as to maintain UPM’s reputation as the most sustainable university.

Alumni are welcome to participate in every programme organised to manifest alumni solidarity in supporting the university’s vision and mission. #daripadaalumnikepadaUPM slogan has proven alumni solidarity has benefited the university and the needs of the underprivileged students,” he said.

For Nurdinie Azlan, a physical disabilities (OKU) student, the initiative taken by ARCUPM and UPM alumni had helped her and her friends to have their own laptops.

“Previously I relied on a small screen on the phone or borrowed my friend’s laptop, but today I am delighted and indebted. I hope this contribution will continue to expand as there are still unfortunate students who wish to have their own laptops. This contribution lifted our spirit to be hardworking and achieve success. One day it is our turn to give back to our beloved alma mater,” she commented.

Nurdinie is a first-year student from the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication taking a Bachelor of Arts (Malay Linguistics). Apart from Nurdinie, other recipients were Thing Jing Xuan, Meena a/p Shanmuganathan, Salamulloh Kamsol, Nur Arifah Arbanah Md Ramli, and Noraisyah Izzati Abdul Rahman.
