SERDANG, 21st July – The International Durian Seminar 2026 (IDS2026) concluded successfully, bringing together researchers, academics, industry players, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and durian enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and explore innovations aimed at strengthening Malaysia's premium durian industry.

Serving as a dynamic platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, the seminar highlighted the latest developments in durian research, cultivation, marketing, and commercialisation while fostering strategic partnerships between academia, industry, and government agencies. The event also underscored Malaysia's growing reputation as a global leader in premium durian production and innovation.

The opening ceremony, held at the Rashdan Baba Auditorium on the morning of 21 July 2026, was officiated by Professor Dr. Shamsul Bahrin Haji Md. Tamrin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community Relations), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Following his opening address, he officially launched the International Durian Seminar 2026, marking the commencement of the two-day programme.

The ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including Dr. Abdul Aziz Zakaria, Chairman of the International Durian Seminar 2026; Mr. Sharudin Mahadi, Deputy President of the Universiti Putra Malaysia Alumni Association (PAUPM); Mr. Haji Mat Amin Jaafar, Deputy Chairman of IDS2026 and Honorary Secretary of PAUPM; Professor Dr. Loh Teck Chwen, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, UPM; His Royal Highness Tengku Syarif Laksamana of Perlis, Dato' Seri Diraja Syed Razlan ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, Former President of PAUPM and Former Chairman of the UPM Board of Directors; Mr. Fahmi Azar Mistar, Director of the UPM Alumni Relations Centre (ARCUPM); and Dr. Ahmad Fareed Ismail, Assistant Secretary of PAUPM and Stage Manager for IDS2026.

The organising committee extends its sincere appreciation to all sponsors and strategic partners whose generous support contributed significantly to the success of the seminar. Special recognition is accorded to His Royal Highness Tengku Syarif Laksamana of Perlis, Dato' Seri Diraja Syed Razlan ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, for generously sponsoring the Premium Durian Buffet, which was enjoyed by all seminar participants throughout the event.

In addition to the technical presentations, keynote sessions, and industry discussions, participants were treated to a unique gastronomic experience through the Premium Durian Buffet, featuring an extensive selection of high-quality durian varieties sourced from across Malaysia. The special initiative provided attendees with an opportunity to appreciate the diversity of Malaysian durians while gaining deeper insights into their distinctive flavours, aromas, textures, and commercial value.

The buffet also created an informal networking environment where participants, exhibitors, researchers, growers, entrepreneurs, and members of the UPM community exchanged ideas and experiences beyond the seminar sessions. These interactions further strengthened professional networks and encouraged meaningful collaborations that are expected to contribute to the continued advancement of Malaysia's premium durian industry.

Adding to the warm and engaging atmosphere, Dr. Abdul Aziz Zakaria, Chairman of IDS2026 and a member of the UPM Alumni Class of 1971, personally greeted seminar participants, exhibitors, and members of the UPM community at the lobby of the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) while they enjoyed the Premium Durian Buffet. His presence reflected the spirit of hospitality and alumni engagement that characterised the seminar.

As the International Durian Seminar 2026 comes to a close, it is hoped that the knowledge shared, strategic partnerships established, and new opportunities explored during the programme will continue to drive innovation, research excellence, and sustainable growth within Malaysia's durian industry. Through collaborative efforts among universities, industry stakeholders, government agencies, and the alumni community, IDS2026 has reaffirmed its role as an important platform for advancing the premium durian sector at both the national and international levels.
