SEBA Series 25, Introduce Prominent Members behind UPM Alumni Association

By: Siti Nur`Ain Feisal

SERDANG – An Hour with Alumni (SEBA) series 25 features Dato' Raihan Sharif, President of UPM Alumni Association who is also UPM alumni class of 1978 and 1982. In this series, SEBA has succeeded to attract numerous alumni to participate in the online series of knowledge and experience sharing from the President of UPM Alumni Association (PAUPM). Other notables were YAM Tengku Syarif Laksamana Perlis Dato' Seri DiRaja Syed Razlan Syed Putra Jamalullail, Chairman of UPM Board of Directors and UPM Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Prof. Dr. Arifin Abdu.

Also attended to show support of alumni programs are Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arba'ie Sujud, Director of UPM Alumni Relations Centre (ARCUPM), Fahmi Azar Mistar, ARCUPM Deputy Director and Nik Hafzaini Nik Hassan, Assistant Registrar of ARCUPM.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arba'ie Sujud expressed his gratitude to the UPM Alumni Association especially to PAUPM president, Dato' Raihan Sharif for the knowledge sharing session.

"For me, SEBA series 25 is remarkable because this UPM student targeted program also attracted the interest of senior alumni from the 70’s era until young alumni to listen to knowledge and experience sharing from Dato’ Raihan Sharif. The spirit of unity that exists between UPM Alumni Relations Centre and UPM Alumni Association shows that these two alumni entities complement each other. All I can say is that these two organizations exist not to compete but to work together to bring alumni and UPM's name as the leading institution of higher learning in the eyes of the world.

I would like to thank Dato' and PAUPM exco for this unity for us to strengthen the functions and roles of both organizations so that it will benefit the alumni and UPM students," said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arba'ie Sujud.

Campus is the Centre to Gain Knowledge and Experience

According to Dato' Raihan, the campus environment is a centre for gaining knowledge, friends and experiences. He was the only village boy from Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan, after completing his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia course, not knowing where to start.

However, after seeing and hearing stories from fellow villagers who had already successfully pursued their studies at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (later to be changed to Universiti Putra Malaysia) he was also interested to study at UPM.

In 1975, he finally pursued his diploma studies majoring in Diploma in Animal Health and Animal Husbandry. Various fond memories were created throughout his studies days.

"What I can never forget was when I need to carry out industrial training at a pig farm. Rejection means failing, if it continues what I have to do. I finally made it as a challenge. The first day was awkward. But over time I knew how to handle it. Although every day I need to cleanse my body, I completed my internship successfully,” Dato’ Raihan shared.

In 1982, Dato' Raihan was once again a student of Universiti Putra Malaysia, when he continued his studies in Bachelor of Science (Resource Economy) and subsequently continued his Master's degree in Business Administration at University of Hartford, Connecticut, USA in 1992.

"In this limited time, all I can say is that the university is a centre to accumulate all the knowledge and experience. Not only knowledge in classes but also knowledge in educating the heart to be a dedicated, reliable and kind hearted. Do not be afraid to hold positions either in college or in faculty, because here if you make a mistake, there are lecturers and friends who will help, but outside the institution mistakes are intolerable.

"At university I am active in all fields, especially sports, leadership including art. In college I also learned to play guitar and creative writing. Those memories are only available in campus. Students should not limit their abilities. They need to explore various fields and skills because the challenges are different and after achieving success, please give back to the university. UPM Alumni Association look forward for your return to give back to alma mater. Keep in mind that without a university where we acquire all the knowledge, we are not what we are today. We at PAUPM are ready to enlighten the alumni," said Dato' president of PAUPM since 2019.
