The special moment eagerly awaited by every student has finally arrived as Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) once again hosts the 49th UPM Convocation Ceremony, Session 2, at its main campus in Serdang. As a prestigious and highly formal event, the ceremony not only symbolises academic achievement, but also elevates the standing of the university as an institution of knowledge that produces competitive graduates. To ensure the smooth conduct of the ceremony, several guidelines and mandatory preparations must be fully observed by all graduates.
All graduates are required to assemble at the parking area adjacent to the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Cultural and Arts Centre, directly facing the iPUTRA building. The designated time for assembly is between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. This time frame is critical, as it involves the arrangement of the procession into the hall. Graduates are therefore encouraged to arrive earlier to avoid congestion and to ensure they are fully prepared before the official movement begins.
Late arrival is strictly not permitted. Graduates who fail to comply with the stipulated time will not be allowed to join the procession or attend the ceremony. This regulation is not intended to cause inconvenience, but to maintain discipline and uniformity throughout the convocation proceedings, in line with long-established protocols.
To ensure the smooth flow of the procession, graduates are not allowed to carry handbags, except for small sling bags that can be concealed within the convocation gown. This rule is important to prevent visual disruption, security issues, and inconsistency during the procession. The university also advises graduates not to bring valuable items such as expensive accessories, small electronic devices, or important documents. This precaution is to minimise the risk of loss, as assembly areas are typically crowded and involve large-scale movement.
During the ceremony, graduates are required to give full cooperation to the appointed event officers who are responsible for ensuring the smooth execution of the event. All instructions given are intended to ensure that every phase of the ceremony—from the entrance procession and conferment of degrees to the exit procession—is conducted in an orderly manner.
Graduates are also not permitted to leave the Grand Hall while the ceremony is in progress. Leaving before the ceremony concludes not only disrupts the proceedings, but also diminishes the formality and dignity of the convocation. Graduates are therefore reminded to ensure their personal comfort before taking their seats in the hall.
A convocation ceremony is not merely an event to receive a scroll, but a milestone that marks a new beginning in each graduate’s professional journey. Thorough preparation and adherence to the guidelines are not merely matters of protocol, but expressions of respect for the university, lecturers, parents, and the entire campus community who have been part of their academic journey.
Walking into the Grand Hall in the official UPM convocation gown is a symbolic moment that connects the past and the future—from years of perseverance in lecture halls and laboratories to confident steps into the professional world. Therefore, complying with all instructions and presenting oneself at one’s best reflects the professionalism of a graduate from a global university.
By adhering to all the prescribed guidelines, graduates not only help ensure the smooth running of the ceremony, but also reinforce UPM’s image as an institution that upholds discipline and ethical values. May the 49th UPM Convocation Ceremony, Session 2, become a meaningful memory for all graduates being celebrated, and serve as a foundation for even greater success in the future.
