By: Siti Nur`Ain Feisal

SERDANG – 13 July 2021, an Hour with Alumni series 26. In this series, alumni class of 2019 Muhamad Iqbal Bin Marzuki Amirudin was invited as the panel to share his experience and career as a chemist in oil and gas. Currently, he is a chemist at a petroleum company in Pengerang, Johor Bahru. Prior to his studies in Bachelor of Science (Honours) Petroleum Chemistry, Iqbal had attended the Foundation Of Agriculture (ASPER) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).

During his studies in Agricultural Science, his interest began to develop in Petroleum Chemistry. Talking about chemistry, it is a challenging field and may challenge a person credibility in the field they are involved in.

In career perspective, the field is vast and the competition to position themself in a petroleum company is highly competitive. In the sharing session, Iqbal gave few important tips in positioning as a chemist upon graduation.

"I need to maintain the momentum of distinction every semester with 3.5 pointer and above. I am so grateful to be accepted as a chemist where I work today. Here I have to do an analysis on every type of oil reserved by the customer. I have to grade each oil and have to prepare report to the customer," he said.

Through the sharing session, Iqbal hopes that UPM students will continue to success regardless in their studies days or after graduation. Seniors who are successful in their respective careers can be used as reference.

"A program like today is a good program and can be a mediator between alumni and students. Through these programmes, alumni can contribute in terms of ideas and share tips with students to help them in their career after graduated,” he said.

SEBA is a program that will invite UPM alumni to share their success that will inspire students to continue pursuing excellence.

This program has invited many successful alumni in their respective fields and the current President of the Alumni Association, Dato' Raihan Sharif who is alumni class of 1978 and 1982. Stay tuned for the next SEBA series with another successful alumni line up. The efforts made by Alumni Relations Centre UPM in bringing academic programs like this are expected to assist students in determining their direction after graduation.
